Made from abstract blocks of ebonized cedar a few blocks from the Pacific Ocean in Hermosa Beach, the Surfhouse is a very small cozy modern home, ideal as a surfer’s paradise. Compared to other houses in the area, the building area for the Surfhouse measures only a mere 33’ x 24’.
The ebonized cedar wood offers a warm rich feel to the exterior, a modern look with the unique arrangement of the staggered windows at the rear of the house. As a whole the house almost resembles a perfect cube, with a slight slope in the upper floor balcony roof.
Designed by XTEN Architecture, the biggest challenge of the project was subtracting the larger areas from a solid form which conformed with zoning regulations. They sought to maximize the space and light, allowing for better views, whilst retaining a sense of privacy from the busy beachside street.
