Flipping through a design magazine could get most people down in the dumps, simply because they know they can only admire the beauty they see and never really execute it in their own homes; not that they don’t want to, it’s just that they cannot afford the exorbitant cost that such designs entail. But if you’re savvy and just a little creative, there’s no reason why you can’t replicate the designer look in your home, with just the minimum damage to your bank account:
Know how to make the old look new: Very often, all that’s need to give your home a fresh lease of life is a fresh coat of the right paint and/or new upholstery over your furniture. While you’re at it, replace your curtains and bedcovers to match your walls and upholstery, and you’ve got a whole new home to be proud of. A new carpet can make your existing space look more comfy and inviting, while a few throw pillows on your couch and sofas may be the easiest way to add color to your living room.
Find what you need at discount and garage sales and thrift stores: Many people give away or sell at throwaway prices perfectly good stuff because they’re moving and the cost of moving all their furniture and furnishings is exorbitant. Look for bargain buys at garage sales, don’t hesitate to visit discount sales, and it’s certainly no shame to be seem browsing through thrift stores. You could find good furniture, especially old ones that are made of genuine wood and not the cardboard lookalikes that sell for fat prices at most retail outlets. All you need to do now is to clean up the old pieces and try and make them look as good as new. Even if you’re not the handyman kind of person, a few self-help books should do the trick.
Steal ideas from your friends and family: If you see something you like in a friend’s home, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t implement the same at your place, as long as you can do it on your budget. The focus is on making your home look and feel good, so do what it takes as long as it does not bite your budget. Similarly, don’t hesitate to pick the brains of friends who work as interior designers or have anything to do with the decorating industry – they could suggest great ideas just by looking at your home, ideas which could easily be implemented by just moving around furniture or changing your lighting or investing in inexpensive decoration items.
It doesn’t have to be expensive to look good; very often, a clean and tidy home is the most attractive house you can own. So when you look to redecorate, keep the focus on alterations or changes that are easy to clean and maintain, because no matter how expensive and fashionable anything is, if it’s dirty and grimy, it’s just a waste of time, money and effort.
