Color blocking has been hot in fashion for a while now, which means it will start to become a trend in interior design in no time flat. While using contrasting colors in interior design is nothing new, you can expect to see it become even more popular as the trend gains traction.
Now, some of you may be asking, what is color blocking? It is essentially using blocks color in alternative sections or element within a room. While you will sometimes see patterns included, they are often left out, leaving the blocks of colors to created the pattern and interest in the room. It makes for a bold, graphic style that can be quite striking when properly executed.
For example, the stripes of the shower curtain above create a bold focal point for the room. The rest of the decor and accessories are built around the combination of colors in the curtains.
It is also important to note that color blocking in interior design doesn’t require an explosion of color everywhere you look. The white walls in the bathroom above balance the bold fuchsia, coral and teal stripes making it palatable even for those of us that are color shy.
While color blocking is often achieved through paint, it can just as easily be accomplished through furniture, textiles, rugs, pillows, etc. For example, the design of the living room above has a strong contrast of colors creating “blocks” of red, orange, yellow, etc. This allows each of the colors to play off of each other, creating an interesting composition in the room.
In the home above, color blocking has been used to compliment and highlight the architecture of the space. Color blocking allows for endless combinations of colors to be used in design.
This is a trend where you can be bold and use exciting and energizing colors into your space. Before you rush out at buy paint for your walls, it is important to refresh yourself on the basics of color and make sure that each color compliments each other.
