Furniture trends are moving away from drab grays and browns to brighter tones. European designers are showing pieces in very bright colors, and you can expect to see them eventually make their way to North American retailers as well.
You may not be ready to change out all your furniture in favor of something that is bright red, hot pink, ice blue, or yellow, but a splash of color can certainly brighten up a room (and lift your spirits at the same time).
If you don’t want to invest in new furniture, consider a clever cover-up instead. Slip covers can give you an updated look without having to replace pieces that are otherwise in good shape.
If you are in the market for some new pieces of furniture this year, look for slim, sleek lines. Heavy bulky furniture is no longer in fashion. Over time, our technology is getting smaller, sleeker and smarter, and it appears that our furniture is following suit.
Details are very important this year. Designers are using contrasting piping, as well as painted trim on tables to create interest without adding bulk. They are making an effort to keep the lines sleek.
Look for interesting materials in furniture design. If a piece is not going to be bulky, then its texture will be an important consideration as well as its color. When you are looking for items for your home, think about how you can create interest with subtle uses of texture.

I really like the red, white and blue colors in furniture Ethan Allen is now selling. Cute!
I still love neutrals for that relaxed, casual but clean feeling. Looks like I am headed towards being “out of style” soon!
