Everybody loves an optical illusion, and most of us who actually understood the movie Inception really enjoyed its reality-within-reality motif. Designer Vivian Chiu incorporates both indulgences into her Inception chair, crafted and released onto the market in 2011.
The 16″ x 32″ x 16″ masterpiece involves a Matryoshka-like presentation, with a progressively smaller chair “within” each larger one, crafted through a series of carefully-placed grooves and notches in its frame and on its back.
As a result, the chairs can be taken apart and put back together with in a relatively facile manner.
Born in Los Angeles and brought up in Hong Kong, Chiu is a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design.
