Are you looking for a unique piece of furniture for your dining room? If you have £13,700 ($22,000) burning a hole in your pocket, you can order a handmade Volumptuous sideboard. Edward Johnson describes this work as, “…a piece that tested me as a maker and made me feel uncomfortable as a designer.”
This sideboard is made by hand from oak and is lined with Cedar of Lebanon. The frame work is shaped by hand to follow each panel’s form. To achieve the striking chocolate brown effect, the wood is fumed with ammonia.
Johnson has described this piece as “sensuous as furniture gets, visually stimulating, enticingly tactile and beautifully scented. It speaks a thousand words about what I believe my work is about.”
If the sideboard is not quite what you’re looking for, Johnson also makes other items. An example from his website is the Eleanor Toy Chest. This £2,300 ($3,717.00)
is made from cherry and walnut wood, and is built to last.
The cherry wood will darken with time, but the walnut will gradually get lighter. This toy chest measures 500 mm H x 850 mm W x 500 cm D (19 11/16 in H x 33 15/32 in W x 19 11/15 in D).
Johnson’s Inspired coffee table can be ordered for £2,900 ($4,687.00) and is made from Olive Ash. The glass top is bonded directly onto the stainless steel bosses on the table top using special adhesives. He was looking for a fresh and contemporary design, and he has definitely succeeded in this instance.
The coffee table looks great, but we don’t know that we could justify the cost of a designer piece for our decorating budget. How much would you spend for a one-of-a kind item for your home?
