How to save Energy with your Washing Machine

washing machineWashing machines are important household appliances that we use to keep our clothes clean. There are certain tips you can follow when using your washing machine that will help you conserve energy and resources.

One of the easiest things you can do when washing clothes is to use cold water. The majority of the power used to run a washing machine comes from heating the water. In order to save about 90% of the power, simply choose the cold water cycle on your washing machine. If you do this, then it is also a good idea to utilise a laundry detergent that is specially designed for cold water washes.

Another added benefit is that cold water is better for your clothes, which will keep them in good shape for longer. Warm and hot water are more prone to shrinking your clothes. Also, your clothes will fade and wear out much more quickly. If you have oily stains on your clothes and typically use hot water for this, you can even switch to the warm water setting, rather than hot. This too will save some energy. Also, when selecting the heat setting for your rinse cycle, cold will do just as well as warm or hot.

Another common practice is to separate your laundry. This is done to group similar colours and fabrics together. This helps not only to protect your clothing, but also to conserve energy. By grouping similar fabrics you can also put them in the dryer together. This makes it more efficient to dry the load as it comes out from the washing machine. Also, another thing to keep in mind is the size of your load. It is best to wait until you have a full load before washing your clothes. It will cost about the same to run a small load in your washing machine as it does a full load.
