The Ashes to Ashes Chair: Place to Sit or Work of Art?

Stockholm-born, Copenhagen-dwelling designer Johanna Mattsson takes an interesting approach to her work; her dedication to clean lines and subtle asterisk-inspired shapes somehow straddles the line between the childlike and the sophisticated.

Having graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts School of Design — and having worked for Mads Odgard Design, Berg/C.F. Moller Architects and Lundberg Design, Mattsson has been privy to an array of strong design influences yet holds her own in terms of simple-chic individuality.

A prime example of her work is the Ashes to Ashes chair, as much a piece of art as it is a place to sit. The small burst of spindles in the back call to mind a young tree sprouting up, ostensibly, in place of the one used to create the chair itself — hence the title and its inherent statement.

The chair is available naked or in a light or dark stain.
