In recent years we have seen some quite stunning furniture designs made from reclaimed, recycled or reused wood. Here we showcase Uhuru, a Brooklyn design studio who create furniture and products which are beautiful in their simplicity with an awareness of sustainability and eco-friendliness.
Uhuru means “freedom” in Swahili, and there is certainly a free way of thinking in these furniture styles. In fact, their craft of taking unwanted materials and turning them into highly valued items is referred to as “upcycling” instead of recycling.
At a glance, one could be forgiven for thinking these furniture designs are manufactured from high end wood, trees felled specifically for the manufacture of the pieces. Who knows, maybe the furniture here is actually more luxurious looking than the items the offcuts came from
