Dreaming in Color: Upholstered Headboards

The bedroom offers an endless array of outlets for creativity, and since it’s the space where we do all our dreaming (literally, anyway), it’s arguably the most personal room in any home. As dreams change, so do tastes and the palettes that come with them. So, for those of us who like to change things around every now and then, upholstered headboards offer an infinite variety of options for color, texture and pattern.

Much like chairs, headboards can be rather easily reupholstered, making them perfect candidates for seamless shifts in interior design as the years go by. Particularly breezy is the Better Homes & Gardens take, below, on the “hanging headboard” — essentially, a single- or double-panel curtain hung from a rod suspended several feet above the mattress.  It can be switched out in a rotation with other panels, giving the room an ever-shifting temporary makeover.

The perfect companion to evolving tastes, upholstered and upholstery-inspired “beds” offer a freedom not seen by more traditional wood and iron counterparts.  To coin a phrase from an ever-memorable rock song from decades past, “dream on.”
