How Many Pillows Do You Need on Your Bed, Anyway?

January 22, 2013 by

This bed looks really inviting, doesn’t it? This is a great look, with the decorative pillows all fluffed up and placed at the top of the bed. Do we really need all of those pillows to sleep with?

The answer is No. The colorful pillows are called “decorative” or “accent” for a reason. You will probably be able to get a good night’s sleep with one relatively flat pillow. When it’s time to turn in for the night, simply move the pretty colored ones out of the way. You can replace them when you make your bed in the morning.

Removing them from the bed will keep them cleaner, too. If you put them near your face at night, you will be transferring oil and make up onto the fabric of the pillows. This will mean you will have to try spot cleaning the fabric or taking them to the dry cleaners sooner than you had planned.

There may be times when you need extra support at night, due to pregnancy or when you are recovering from surgery. It’s a good idea to have extra pillows on hand to place between your knees or under your back to help you get more comfortable.

Some people find it easier to fall asleep if they have the support of a body pillow that they can curl up with.

If you find you need to prop yourself up with multiple pillows to get the rest you need, you should consult a doctor.

Why? What sort of problem could this signal?

Too many pillows! They always end up on the floor. I find it’s better to bring color to a bed with a throw blanket in a warm color for the end of the bed — adding warmth to cold toes on winter nights! And if you do want more hues in your pillows, add one or two additional standard pillows (not decorative) in bright cases to your bed so you can actually use them, not just dress up a made bed.

You can never have enough pillows! Just toss the ones you don’t use at night onto the floor, or use a bedroom storage bench if you’re worried.
