Sketches of The Aquaria Grande project (above) have been making their way around the Internet lately, dropping the jaws of even the most jaded globetrotters and bon vivants; the project, spearheaded by the Wadhwa Group, incorporates glass-edged swimming pools into the balconies of every floor of the 37-story high-rise planned for the western Indian port city of Mumbai.
Although it’s arguably the grandest of any known pool — or series of them, rather — it’s not the first time one (or several) has been placed with stunning effect at the edge of a high-rise. The Marina Bay Sands Hotel in Singapore, for example, boasts an infinity-edge pool perched at a precarious-sounding 650 feet in the air on the edge of the building’s 57th story.
A bit closer to sea level stands the less fear-inducing but equally breathtaking pool at The Raleigh Hotel in Miami Beach, Florida, gracing the hotel’s grounds with the artful design that led LIFE Magazine to call it “the most beautiful pool in America” in 1947 (and, frankly, perhaps still today).
