The word quatrefoil, simply enough, translates to mean “four leaves.” The ubiquitous pattern of hyper-symmetrical shapes, some barbed, some otherwise embellished, and some looking quite a bit like the classic four-leaf clover, has risen to popularity lately as a complement (and sometimes, an alternative) to the ever-trendy chevron stripe.
Found everywhere from Renaissance architecture and military regalia to modern duvet covers and sorority emblems, the shape can be replicated into a full print, offering a timeless and perhaps unintentionally preppy sensibility to the spaces in which it appears.
Available in high-end boutiques and department stores like Lily Pulitzer and Neiman Marcus as well as uber-accessible Etsy shops and vintage houses, quatrefoil accessories are a trend that will, ironically enough, always remain in style.
