A stairwell in your home is much more than a means of attaching two or more locations. In the hands of a skilled craftsman, it can appear to float into the air. At the same time, stairs must hold up to everyday wear and tear.
If your home features a striking staircase, you may want to choose colors that draw the eye to it and make it a focal point for a space. A lighter wall color and a rich chocolate shade will create the right level of contrast to immediately make the staircase the star of the room.

This large, wooden staircase has an open concept. The light stain chosen for the wood and the open concept mean the overall look is light and airy.
The texture on the walls helps to define the space. Plain walls against a polished wood surface wouldn’t provide much of a contrast in this instance. This choice compliments, rather than competes with, the staircase.

You may want to set off a stairway from the rest of the room in some instances. Adding a feature wall will accomplish this goal quite nicely. The rails keep the stairwell space open and light, while still designating it as a separate area. A light wall color also helps to avoid making this area of the house too dark.
Do you see your stairway area as a place to decorate? Or is it merely an in-between space in your home?

My home’s staircase is carpeted, but some day I hope to DIY paint and stain the wood beneath the carpeting to make the stairs look like beautiful hardwood stairs! I’ve looked into lots of tutorials on how to do it!
Stairs seem to be incredibly expensive to redo. So much workmanship involved! Wish I could have something dramatic and striking like these.
